De-Risking Leadership Succession at a Top 10 Law Firm

How Qurated implemented robust succession planning to enhance IT capability at a leading law firm.

Defining a Leadership Roadmap

This top-10 law firm engaged Qurated to assess its IT capability and organisational structure. Following in depth analysis over a 4.5 month period, Qurated recommended a full-scale modernisation to address critical gaps.

Succession Planning to Meet Technology Demands

The firm's technology environment faced a critical juncture, with key talent approaching retirement and no formal succession plan in place. As technology continued to evolve, the absence of a defined talent strategy posed a significant functional risk.

The Qurated Project

Qurated delivered several key initiatives to identify and mitigate risk in the firm's IT capability:

Talent profiling framework

Conducted talent assessments of nine key individuals using a competency framework based on five leadership attributes and ten potential indicators.

Succession matrix

Designed a succession matrix to indicate opportunity and best fit for each IT leader: “Ready Now,” “Hold Fort,” and readiness within 1/3/5 years.

Operating model design principles

Reviewed the firm's operating model and proposed three potential transformation options (Courses of Action).

Market analysis

Conducted market benchmarking against peer firms and industry trends - for example, the demand for permanent, interim, outsourced, nearshore, and offshore IT roles.

Risk assessment

Identified future risks to the firm's IT operations across business continuity, skills gaps, technical debt, and more.

“ I wanted to reiterate how much value and insight Qurated brought to our organisation during the IT Succession Planning engagement. We have a lot of work to do with you in the next few months to reimagine our organisation. I know that other Chiefs at [the firm] are interested in pursuing similar engagements with Qurated to address their professional development and identifying future leadership in their organisations.”

A Future-Proof Operating Model

Based on the findings, Qurated presented three recommendations on how to evolve the operating model to future proof the organisation:

  • Incremental Change – Minimal disruption, focus on internal collaboration.
  • Elevated Model – Adds strategic roles, strengthens cloud and security leadership.
  • Enterprise Tech Function –  Full integration of IT, KM, Data, and AI for commercial leverage.

Outcomes Achieved

  • Talent Development – Introduced a structured mentoring programme, along with redesigned career paths to retain and grow internal talent.
  • Cultural Shift – Broke down silos, improved documentation, enhanced communication, and aligned IT support with business expectations.
  • Technology Prioritisation –  Created an organisational roadmap that prioritised cloud modernisation, AI strategy, data governance, and cybersecurity investment.
