If you're interested in entrepreneurship, fintech, leadership, startups, and scaling high-growth businesses, this episode is packed with insights and practical lessons.

Technology That Genuinely Makes a Difference

While building financial services products across Africa, Philip witnessed first-hand how technology can improve people's lives. One solution enabled customers to access services remotely, reducing the need for lengthy travel and long queues. The result was simple but powerful: people spent more time with their families and less time navigating financial barriers.

That experience reinforced a belief that continues to shape Zilch today—technology should create meaningful value for consumers, not just convenience.

Challenging Consumer Credit

The idea for Zilch emerged after Philip moved to the UK and struggled to access credit despite having a successful business background. The experience highlighted what he saw as a system that was often difficult to understand, expensive to use, and inaccessible for many consumers.

His response was to rethink the experience from the ground up: create a product that combines flexibility, transparency, and simplicity while removing many of the frustrations associated with traditional credit products.

Staying Focused on the Mission

Throughout the conversation, one theme stood out above all others: conviction. Philip believes successful businesses are built by staying focused on the problem you're trying to solve, even when distractions and alternative opportunities emerge. His philosophy is straightforward—if something needs fixing, fix it; and if you start something, finish it.

For Zilch, that mindset has been central to its growth. By remaining relentlessly focused on improving the customer experience, the company continues to challenge traditional approaches to consumer finance and build products designed around what customers actually need.
